The Most Important Section
Recruiters scan resumes in an F-pattern: across the top, then down the left side. Your work experience section sits right in the focal zone. It's where hiring decisions are made.
Getting this section right is the difference between callbacks and silence.
The Anatomy of a Perfect Experience Entry
Job Title | Company Name | Location
Start Date – End Date (or Present)
• Achievement bullet with metric and impact
• Achievement bullet with scope and outcome
• Achievement bullet with specific deliverable
Each element matters:
Job Title: Use your actual title. If it's unclear, you can add a clarifying parenthetical: "Growth Lead (Marketing Manager)"
Company Name: Include a brief descriptor if the company isn't well-known: "TechCorp (B2B SaaS, 200 employees)"
Location: City, State/Country. For remote roles: "Remote" or "New York, NY (Remote)"
Dates: Month Year format is standard. "Jan 2022 – Present"
Writing Achievement Bullets
The CAR Formula
Challenge → Action → Result
"Faced with a 40% increase in customer churn (Challenge), redesigned the onboarding email sequence with A/B-tested content (Action), reducing churn by 25% and recovering $180K in annual revenue (Result)."
The XYZ Formula
Accomplished X, as measured by Y, by doing Z.
"Increased quarterly sales by 35% ($450K) by restructuring the outbound sales process and implementing a new CRM workflow."
How Many Bullets Per Role?
- Current/most recent role: 4-6 bullets
- Previous roles: 3-4 bullets
- Older roles (5+ years ago): 2-3 bullets
- Very old roles (10+ years): 1-2 bullets or consolidate
Ordering Your Experience
Reverse Chronological (Standard)
Most recent job first. This is what 95% of resumes should use.
When to deviate:
- Career pivoters: A functional or hybrid format might better highlight transferable skills
- Returning after a gap: Consider a skills-based format with a brief employment timeline
Handling Common Scenarios
Employment Gaps
Be honest but strategic:
- If you did something productive during the gap (freelancing, courses, volunteering), include it
- For brief gaps (under 6 months), using year-only dates can bridge them naturally
- If asked in interviews, have a confident, honest explanation ready
Short Tenures
- If you were at a job for less than 3 months, consider leaving it off
- Multiple short tenures can be grouped: "Contract Roles (2023-2024)"
Promotions Within a Company
Show growth clearly:
TechCorp | 2019 – Present
Senior Developer (2022 – Present)
• [senior-level achievements]
Developer (2019 – 2022)
• [developer-level achievements]
Multiple Similar Roles
Don't repeat the same bullets. Each role should highlight different achievements or growth areas.
What NOT to Include
❌ Generic duties ("Attended team meetings") ❌ Obvious tasks ("Answered phone calls" for a receptionist) ❌ Subjective claims ("Was the best team member") ❌ Confidential information ("Managed classified project for [Client]") ❌ Reasons for leaving ("Left due to management changes")
